Launch of SOS Sedgefield (Save our Sedgefield): A New Environmental Watchdog for the Region

A well-attended inaugural meeting of SOS Sedgefield took place in March 2026at the Sedgefield Lions Club, hosted by Niel de Villiers.

The event brought together a broad cross-section of interested residents, reflecting the community’s ongoing commitment to the preservation and responsible development of the greater Sedgefield area. The founding members presented an overview of the organisation’s purpose and envisaged role. SOS Sedgefield will operate as an environmental watchdog, with its area of interest extending from Wilderness in the west to Brenton-on-Sea in the east. Importantly, the organisation has expressed its intention to work in cooperation with existing structures, including the Sedgefield Ratepayers Association (SRA), to ensure alignment and to avoid duplication of effort. Collaboration with other community organisations will also be encouraged where appropriate.

A clear emphasis was placed on the organisation’s environmental focus. While not opposing development or construction in principle, SOS Sedgefield will advocate for such activities to take place strictly within acceptable environmental parameters.

The founders were at pains to point out that the organisation does not see itself as an activist body and will not involve itself in routine or minor issues, but rather concentrate on matters of significant environmental consequence. Examples cited included properties reportedly earmarked for transfer by Minister Bredell to SANParks or Cape Nature for conservation purposes in 2019, including land situated west of the Sedgefield lagoon mouth. These were presented as indicative of the scale and nature of issues the organisation intends to address.

It was further noted that meaningful engagement in such matters will require substantial research and preparation. In some instances, documentation may run into thousands of pages, highlighting the need for committed support from within the community. The SRA will continue to monitor developments relating to SOS Sedgefield and will keep members informed as the organisation’s role evolves.
